RECAP | “Skimas In March” Charity Event

    Words/Photos: Chris Trapasso

On Saturday March 22nd, the skies cleared for what may have been the final cold front of the season, setting the stage for an unforgettable "Skimas in March". With some of the best waves weI've ever seen for a contest on the East Coast, the day was filled with incredible moments, thrilling rides, and a sense of community that made it truly special.

This year, the event raised an impressive $2,551 for the Pipers Angels Foundation, showing the amazing generosity of all those who participated. Over 40 competitors joined in, pushing their limits and demonstrating their passion for skimboarding. One unique feature of the competition was the challenge of being bumped up to a more skilled division, even if you didn't think you belonged there. And if you got knocked out? You went back to the division you felt most comfortable in, making it a fun, inclusive, and motivating experience for everyone.

The event saw some incredible talent, with pro riders like Dylan Duncan and CJ Lugo showcasing their skills, thanks to Zap Skimboards. But the amateurs didn’t just watch from the sidelines. Riders like Landon Rapp, Zach Rubin, Dylan Runge and Evan Rubin took on the pros and held their own, proving that everyone has the potential to shine. The relaxed environment encouraged skimmers to ride as if they were with their best friends, which created some of the most exciting moments of the day.

One standout was Nicole Phillips, a Zap Skimboards rider, who rose to the occasion and crushed the competition in the “Best We Got” division. Initially hesitant to compete at that level, she showed everyone just how much she deserved to be there.

It was a day where everything clicked—waves, weather, and the amazing community coming together for a great cause. The atmosphere was filled with energy, with competitors cheering each other on, from the skimmers barely getting on their boards to those throwing huge tricks like Dylan Duncan, who may have done the largest air drop I've seen ever in the east coast.

"Skimas in March" wasn’t just a contest; it was a celebration of community, generosity, and a shared love of skimboarding. Thanks to all the sponsors, competitors, and supporters, this event became one of the best contests we've ever had and from the bottom of our hearts thank you so much!
