Get together after the contest day 9/7 at Tommy’s Tavern & Tap // Trophy Presentation & After Party (9/8) at Donovan’s Reef
LOCATION:
The contest takes place on the Municipal Beach in Sea Bright, NJ, at the Center Street intersection. The contest area will be set up Friday night/Saturday morning and stay up until after the contest on Sunday. We need and appreciate volunteers for set up and breakdown.
PARKING:
There is convenient parking in the main municipal lot in the center of town, a short walk to the contest site. Paid parking is in effect in all municipal lots in Sea Bright. Parking costs $2 per hour between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. and folks this is strictly enforced…You can use cash or credit cards at the kiosks OR you can load an app – mPay2Park – onto your mobile device. It allows you to pay, or to increase the amount of time on your space, without having to visit the kiosk.
SATURDAY MORNING:
We will host a mandatory rider’s meeting for all divisions at 8:30 a.m. (time subject to change). We will explain priority and interference, and go over the rules. We request that each rider review the UST video that explains priority and interference; we would like to avoid making these calls this weekend.
It is OK if you have questions; please come see Jon D (SkimUSA Director) on Saturday morning and he will help clarify.
At registration, competitors will receive a drawstring bag containing a reusable water bottle donated by Scott & Kedz, gift cards for free fries at Hearthly Burger, and many other goodies.
Lunch will be provided for competitors ONLY (you will receive a lunch chip at registration). Atlantic Water Products will be on-site to refill your water bottle during the contest.
The heat schedule is subject to change, so please stay aware! If you plan to leave the beach, check in at the SkimUSA tent to ensure you don’t risk missing your heat or judging. If a competitor is not at their heat (or judging) we will give 1 minute on the clock to appear and then start the heat.
JUDGING & SCORING:
Pro heats are judged by Trained Professional Judges. Amateur heats are judged by SkimUSA members – other riders who are in the contest. We believe that this is a great way for amateurs to better understand how they are judged and to grow within the sport. It is also a responsibility as a member of SkimUSA. If you cannot judge during your assigned time, you must communicate that to Toby, Jon or Wendy (SkimUSA Directors) at the beginning of the day. If you have never judged before, please let us know as soon as you come up to the judging area and we will train you.
We have attached the 2023 SkimUSA Updated Scoring Scale FINAL UST.pdf for your review – this is the base of how everyone is scored. Please note that page 2 is an overlay to the matrix and judges have a 2.0 variance that they can apply. As a reminder, judging is an art & science and the view from the scaffolding is very different from the view on liveheats or on the ground.
Additionally, priority plays a big role on who is judged. The rider with priority will always be the judge’s focus and that ride will be fully watched and judged over other riders. If the majority of the judges are able to see a non-priority rider complete a wave, then it may be scored (but not guaranteed).
We have 3 SkimUSA Directors whose attention is on the heat at all times to ensure that heats are being judged fairly. Please remember that only top 3 rides count for all heats and the highest and lowest score is always dropped. For our competitors who get the adrenaline rush and want to skim more than 15 waves, we ask that you consider slowing down because it is quality over quantity.
If you have any questions about your score or judging please come see Toby West, Executive Director and we ask that you refrain from going straight to the people who judged your heat. If a parent has a question about judging, then they and the competitor need to come up to ask the question. We are happy to answer questions and give explanations to competitors.
PRO PURSE:
We have committed to be fully transparent with the amount and breakdown. We will post the information on Instagram.
CODE OF CONDUCT:
As a reminder, our community is a family that is built on love, respect, support, and positive vibes for all people. We have a zero-tolerance for bullying, harassment, and discrimination of any type. Each of you signed a Code of Conduct as part of registration and we ask that you review it to understand the expectation. If you need a copy, please go to our website.
PRO WARM-UP AREA:
Thanks to our sponsors, we are creating a “Pro Only” Athlete Zone with training and warmup equipment to enable you to prepare for your heat. We ask that you respect that this area be limited to the Professional athletes only. PARENTS — please remind your amateur competitors that this is not a play area.
COMPETITORS CIRCLE:
The only people allowed in the competitor area during Heats are:
- Competitors in the heat and they must be wearing their jersey
- Each Pro Rider will be allowed one (1) coach in the competitor circle. This person will be able to read out scores to the competitor during the heat, give time checks and coach
- Media/press people will be allowed on the edges of the competitor circle but cannot interfere with any riders or cause a visual obstruction to the judges.
LIVE STREAMING:
SkimUSA will Livestream the contest – while we are very excited about our new capability, we want to level-set that we will inevitably hit bumps in the road, so please be patient with us. ALSO – please know that there is a lag between LiveHeats Scores and the video. This is not something we can control but something we have observed and that we are talking through with LiveHeats – much of it has to do with the internet and bandwidth.
SPONSORS:
Big thanks to ALL of our sponsors! We are humbled by everyone’s support and generosity. Please support them with your business while you are visiting Sea Bright.
We look forward to seeing each of you and wish you good luck!! Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions.
