The ‘24 Zap World Championship of Skimboarding isn’t our favorite contest because we sponsor it…it’s our favorite contest because there’s no place quite like Dewey Beach, DE! The atmosphere, the beach, the waves, the town, the people, and the vibes are always on point and make for the best weekend every season.
However, this year was a bit different with the presence of Hurricane Debby trying to rain on our parade, figuratively and literally. This made for some pretty tricky conditions for the riders on the first day of the contest but luckily for everyone, the storm moved on and we had much more “Dewey-like” conditions for the remainder of the event.
According to our records, this was the LARGEST skim competition to date! With 226 competitors total, it was amazing seeing everyone compete and have a good time with one another! So thank you to everyone who came out and competed!
We crowned champions from all over the world with Lucas Fink and Chabe White taking the top spots in Pro Men and Pro Women, respectively. Some other standout performances of the weekend included local shredder and Zap team rider, Sam McCoy, who is known for his powerful yet smooth style made it a close race in the Pro Men’s and ended up just missing out on a podium spot to take 4th place for the weekend. Timmy Gamboa was another standout rider, who mixed in body varial to switch rides throughout the weekend alongside a variety of ultra critical frontside and backside turns. Dane Cameron who finished in second in the event put together the highest heat total of the weekend during his quarterfinal round, tallying up 26.5 points with an 8.77, an 8.87, and an 8.90. On the women’s side, Alex Yokely who finished in second had one of the best rides of the weekend with a backside hack to 360 on the way in on one of the biggest waves of the day. Brazilian Julia Dias and Delaware local Sydney Pizza also had standout weekends, finishing in third and fourth place respectively.
