Words: Turner Scarborough
On a sunny Saturday morning in Huntington Beach, the tide was just right, the vibes were high, and stoke was in full effect as the Huntington Beach Skim Club hosted a free skimboarding clinic for riders of all levels. From first-timers to rising shredders, this event was all about building community, spreading knowledge, and sharing the pure joy of riding waves right off the sand.
Over 5 participants showed up ready to learn or level up, and what started as a mellow beach gathering quickly turned into a full-blown session of smiles, slams, and stand-up rides. With experienced riders, Turner Scarborough and Andy(Tiki) Kemp, from the local scene volunteering their time, every participant got one-on-one tips on board control, timing, and reading the wave. The beach was buzzing with encouragement and energy all morning long.
One of the most rewarding parts of the day was watching kids who had never touched a skimboard before pick up a new passion and are eager to come back at end of the session. Parents cheered from the sand, friends pushed each other to go harder, and the Huntington crew made sure everyone felt welcome—whether they were riding Zap boards for the first time or showing off the tricks they’d been practicing for weeks.
The event wasn’t just about teaching; it was about building something special. Huntington Beach is not known for it's skim culture, which is why the club was founded, and with more free clinics like this planned for the summer, the HB Skim Club is setting the tone for a new wave of riders on the West Coast.
Huge thanks to Zap Skimboards, Premier Skim League, and Solid Nutrition for the continued support, and to everyone who came out, helped teach, or just hung out and hyped up the riders. This is what it’s all about—community, progression, and having fun in the water.
See you at the next one!
